2010 Awards Luncheon - April 8th 2010

MCC Annual Awards to be presented at Luncheon at Doubletree Hotel on April 8 11:30a.m. to 1p.m.

The Missoula Cultural Council’s annual Cultural Achievement awards have honored individuals whose outstanding work in the arts and humanities field have made a significant contribution to the community’s quality of life. The Business Support for the Arts awards recognize local business firms that have provided exceptional, long-term support for Missoula arts and cultural organizations. A new honor, Cultural Program of the Year, has been added this year. The 2010 awards will be presented at a luncheon on Thursday, April 8, at the Doubletree Edgewater.

This year’s Cultural Achievement award winners are Bruce Micklus, owner of Rockin’ Rudy’s and longtime individual supporter and sponsor of arts and other non-profit events in Missoula; and Don and Pat Simmons, former chair of University of Montana Music Department and founder of the Missoula Downtown Association’s Out to Lunch, respectively.  First Security Bank will be honored at the luncheon with the Business Support for the Arts award.  YMusic, with Amy Martin as its founder and director, will receive the inaugural Cultural Program of the Year

The keynote speaker for this event is Amy Ragsdale, former UM Dance professor, founder of Headwaters Dance Company, and recent recipient of the Governor’s Arts Award.

In announcing the award winners, Missoula Cultural Council Executive Director Tom Bensen stated, “These annual awards indicate the strong community support and creative energy that makes Missoula a very special place to live and work.”

Another feature of the annual awards luncheon is that local businesses sponsor tables for their employees and guests. Tickets for the event are $23 and may be reserved from MCC at 532-3240 or mcc@missoulacultural.org.  Also visit www.missoulacultural.org

About the Awards

The Missoula Cultural Council presents annual awards for Individual Cultural Achievement and Business Support for the Arts.

Cultural Achievement Award
The Cultural Achievement Awards were first awarded in 1999 to honor individuals whose outstanding work in the arts and humanities have made a significant contribution to the community’s quality of life.
Nominees should be those who have made significant contributions through their leadership and career achievements in the field of arts and humanities. Artists, arts administrators and educators may be eligible if their contributions have clearly demonstrated outstanding service to the community; their activities have exceeded their professional responsibilities; and the outstanding quality of their work has heightened cultural awareness in the community.

Business Support for the Arts Award
The Business Support for the Arts Awards, first awarded in 2004, honor local businesses that have made significant contributions to Missoula’s art and cultural organizations.
Nominees should be local businesses or firms that have provided exceptional, long-term support to Missoula arts and cultural organizations through strong financial and in-kind contributions. The business must offer support to a broad base of arts activities and must have experience serving on volunteer boards in arts organizations.
